Digital systems have important applications in virtually all fields of human activity and have a global influence on the performance of society. The quality of organizations, products, processes and services is increasingly dependent on the application of digital systems. Digital systems play a vital role in innovation of products, processes and services, and decide their success more and more frequently. Modern microelectronic technology enables implementation of a complete complex information processing system on a single chip. The shift from the multi-chip systems to systems-on-a-single-chip opens new possibilities and creates new difficulties. Rapid progress in microelectronic technology is outstripping the designers' abilities to make use of the created opportunities. Substantial improvement can only be achieved through development and application of new generations of design paradigms, methods and tools, more suitable in the new situation. Therefore, there is a need for well-organized collaboration between the industry and academia as well as between the researchers, developers and educators in the area of digital system engineering. The Euromicro Technical Committee on DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN aims at providing effective and efficient support for research collaboration, discussion and exchange of research results, information exchange between industry and academia, technology transfer and educational activities in the area of digital system engineering. It also aims at stimulating the research and exchange of ideas, views, knowledge and experience in this field at the highest scientific and technical level. The committee provides a discussion forum of the state-of-the-art research, development and applications of the (embedded) digital systems architectures and implementations as well as of their efficient design methods and tools. It organises an annual conference: the Euromicro Symposium on Digital System Design: Architectures, Methods and Tools - DSD (http://www.ics.ele.tue.nl/~dsd/), contributes to the Journal of Systems Architectures, organizes tutorials and special sessions related to digital system design at various conferences, delivers colloquia, lecture series, etc., and provides a general home for all professionals and Ph.D. students interested in Digital System Design. The Technical Committee on DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN and the DSD Symposium are concerned with the design, implementation and field usage of (embedded) digital systems and their design automation methods and tools. The main areas of interest are: processor and memory architectures; special computing paradigms and architectures; design theory and technology; specification, modelling, analysis, synthesis, and validation of digital systems; system-on-a-chip-design; and technology-related issues. The DSD Symposium takes place annually in September. The papers are fully peer-reviewed. The proceedings are published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. The Euromicro Technical Committee on DIGITAL SYSTEMS DESIGN and the Euromicro Symposium on Digital System Design (DSD) directly serve a large, heterogeneous, wide spread and thoroughly international world-wide community that includes researchers and practitioners from the universities, (industrial) research institutes, system design houses, EDA companies, semiconductor industry and various system and end product industries. The Euromicro Symposium on Digital System Design, being an important meeting place for the European researchers and practitioners in digital system engineering, has a thoroughly international programme committee, and significant and steadily increasing participation from other important regions, like the USA, Asia, Australia and South America.
